Creating Alan’s Legacy
In response to a worrisome increase in the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC) in patients under the age of 50, the American Cancer Society recently released its latest CRC screening guidelines, which recommends screening now starting at age 45. The peculiarity surrounding ‘young onset’ colon cancer is that affected individuals do not have the usual risk factors such as family history, obesity, smoking, alcohol, etc. Additionally, younger individuals are more prone to develop rectal cancer than colon cancer compared to older peers with CRC.
Mount Sinai’s Professor of Medicine and Oncological Sciences Steven Itzkowitz, MD, FACP, FACG, AGAF, is embarking on a study to identify risk factors in young onset CRC known as the CRAYON study (ColoRectal Cancer in Adults at Young ONset). In its initial phase, Dr. Itzkowitz and his team need funding to establish this ambitious project and its feasibility.
With our support, this work can soon expand to all seven major NYC institutions and potentially launch a larger, NIH-funded study.
