It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the passing of Amalia Buxton on Thursday, October 20th, 2022. She died peacefully in her sleep at home on the Upper East Side surrounded by her family. She was 100 years old.
Like her husband Jorge N. Buxton, MD, the first Director of the Cornea Service at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, and her son Douglas F. Buxton, MD, Surgeon Director and President of the Jorge N. Buxton, MD, and Douglas F. Buxton, MD, Microsurgical Education Fund, Amalia cherished her long-standing, special relationship with the Infirmary. She worked at NYEE from the late 60’s until 2007 and was a beloved mentor and supporter of the staff, residents, fellows, and hospital leadership during her tenure. Amalia shared her husband’s and son’s commitment to and passion for education and attended the 2021 rededication ceremony of the Jorge N. Buxton, MD, and Douglas F. Buxton, MD, Microsurgical Education Center at NYEE. Amalia will be missed by all who met and interacted with her.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, January 25th at 3pm at the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer (869 Lexington Avenue at 65th Street).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Amalia’s memory be made to the Jorge N. Buxton, MD, and Douglas F. Buxton, MD, Microsurgical Education Fund to support the educational mission of NYEE to provide the best clinical and surgical training for our residents and fellows maintaining our world-class level of surgical technology and patient care.Your generous donation will foster ophthalmic and otolaryngologic microsurgical teaching in an environment that promotes experimentation, innovation, and excellence.
